Chapter 11

AVA

It took an incredible amount of convincing to get Xelan to accept, but surprisingly Brokdar—or Brok as he insisted I call him—agreed with me.

“It will be far more likely for an Elite to attend the party with a female slave.” He’d turned to me and bowed his head. “Not that you’ll be one for long.”

“Thank you, Brok.” I’d shot him a smile as Xelan had paced the hallway.

After I’d stated the reasons for me to come on the mission, he’d growled and escaped the room. I hadn’t been deterred, simply following behind and calmly continuing my arguments. I was no stranger to stating my case. Dogged persistence is how I’d risen so high in the academic arena. Brok had found us like that, and upon hearing my side of it, he concurred.

Xelan looked like a child whose favorite toy had been snatched away, and it took everything in me not to laugh. With a bunch of grumbles, and what I could only assume were Rhonar curses, he eventually saw the error of his thinking. I wasn’t too mad about it. If I was honest, it was nice having someone worry about me. I’d been independent for a long time, always fighting my way up the ladder and working toward my goals. So to have someone concerned about my health and happiness, not to mention my safety? Well, I didn’t have it in me to complain about that.

“Fine,” Xelan conceded at last. “But you’ll do everything I, or Brok, says.” He waved a finger at me, and I couldn’t hold back the grin. “No arguments.”

I grasped the hand of his waving finger and brought it to my chest. “I promise, Xelan. I just want to help.” Holding his gaze, I added, “It’s important to me.”

He sighed. “I understand. I just…” He stepped closer, invading my space and kissing me deeply. His tongue rolled against mine, all his feelings apparent in his kiss. When he let me go, he put our foreheads together, and said, “I don’t want anything to happen to you.”

“Same, big guy!” I patted his cheek. “So let’s make it through this together. Okay?”

He nodded. For about an hour—or span as they called it—we went over the plan. Tallis and Maena would stay behind. Brok had been posing as Xelan’s bodyguard since the beginning, so his presence at a social event would be accepted, part of an Elite’s security precaution. Since I was the newest “prize” as the Elites liked to name their favored slaves, Xelan would be showing me off. It meant changing from the lovely dress Maena had procured for me to an outfit that was…well, not lovely.

“Are you sure I should be wearing this?” I picked at the skintight material that had to be the Craxion version of latex.

Xelan’s eyes narrowed. “You could always stay here.”

“Nice try.” I shook my head. “It’s fine. I’ll get used to it. At least it’s not showing skin.” The merlot-colored bodysuit covered me from neck to ankle and came with a matching pair of equally tight knee-high boots.
